In 1968 producer/singer/writer, Jerry Williams Jr., found a popular group playing at Small's Paradise in New York. He decided to try his luck at recording them. Lionel Richie and the other members of The Commodores (formerly the Jays) were only too happy to try their luck at success.

While the results were exciting and produced some highly listenable and danceable soul music, Williams was unable to convince the top records execs that the band had a commercial future. After several years of trying Williams gave up and moved on.

In 1971 The Commodores landed a contract with Motown. After several years of assorted producers, Motown finally let the group produce themselves. This began their string of big hits including "Three Times A Lady", "Brick House", "Easy" and many others.

The sounds on this CD are from those early days in 1968, when no one believed that Lionel Richie and The Commodores would amount to anything.

If you are a fan of The Commodores and Lionel Richie, here is your chance to hear the sound of The Commmodores instrumentals as played in those club days in 1968.
