Conte Candoli, was one of the greatest trumpet players.
After graduating from high school, he joined Woody Herman's band and traveled on the road with Woody; as well as with other top name bands, such as Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman and Tex Beneke.
Conte Candoli never stopped evolving, whether it was in the Ventura Band with Chubby Jackson, Stan Kenton or Woody Herman or in his six year association with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars; as well as his extensive years with Shelly Manne and His Men at Shelly's Manne-Hole.
As a veteran of countless studio recording sessions, "Count" became a favorite, featured sideman of such performers as Stan Getz, Benny Carter, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Gerry Mulligan and Sarah Vaughan, to name a few.
Conte relished the chance to play live with small combos, whenever he gets the chance. "At this point in my life, I want to make sure I get to swing out as often as I can".
It would seem that Pete Candoli has been biding his time in the wings all these years. While Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, etc. have long enjoyed broad public recognition, Pete has finally attained the level of popular acceptance that the quality of his talents as a jazz trumpeter deserves.
Within the Music World Pete Candoli is regarded as one of the most precise and eloquent interpreters of jazz. He and his trumpet playing brother Conte have what amounts to a cult following among aficionados.
A trumpet player of major importance, Pete's association with top bands reads like a "Who's Who" of jazz. He has been featured with Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Less Brown, Count Basie, Freddy Slack,Charlie Barnet, etc... in fact, he has played with over 27 of the op named bands.
He has composed and arranged music and conducted music for Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee among others.
