Benny Goodman was born is Chicago in 1909. By the 1930's he had assembled his own jazz band and was hailed as the most brilliant jazz clarinetist ever to live, a distinction he still holds. During the 1930's Goodman worked with such names as Gene Krupa, the brilliant Charlie Christian, Lester Young and the magnificent Lady Day - Billie Holiday.

Goodman was one of the few jazzmen to achieve massive commercial acceptance with the great body of the public not generally disposed to jazz musicians, and his work did much to enhance the careers of many jazzmen to follow. He was particularly influential in bringing the inimitable Count Basie to the attention of the mass public. Many jazz buffs feel that Goodman's early work in the 1930's has never been surpassed, by Goodman or any other musician.

It is from that period that these recordings emanate. These are highly rare live performances that have not been previously available on record. And we are proud to make them available here.
